About Me

I am new to painting, very new… like a kid in a toyshop… new. I love playing with the colours, making them work their magic. I love twisting ideas a little, or sometimes a lot.

Each painting is a new adventure. Sometimes I start with sketches of ideas and sometimes I start with the blank canvas. My ideas can simmer over weeks or boil over hours.

I have always enjoyed looking at art from a very young age. I must have been soaking up all those paintings for sometimes I paint something and I am reminded of the shadows from this painting or ‘the tone of that one.

I am extremely fortunate in that I have two muses. Filbert, my cat, often sits with me whilst I paint. He will lie down on the bed and alternate between dozing and criticising my work. Sometimes I pay attention to what he suggests, other times I ignore.

My other muse is my wonderful wife, Maria. She has been so supportive of my artistic endeavours; she, too, can be critical, but I always listen to her.

My Story

1958

I was born in Leicester in 1958. My parents were Mavis and John; Dad was a sheet metal worker and Mum worked in the hosiery trade. I have a sister Jaq, short for Jaqueline, who still lives in Leicestershire.

1965

I attended Wyggeston Grammar School for Boys.

1977

A university place brought me to London where I studied Geography at Goldsmiths College from 1977 – 1980. From there it was work. A career in banking and latterly a career in teaching.

2022

With retirement, I decided to ‘try’ art…
